A Little French Door

Sometimes a very subtle change in a room can make all the difference in the world. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, specifically at the stove, where there is a small 24″ door to the dining room. There it is to the left. DSCN2421

Upon my daily Craigslist check, I stumbled upon a listing for sold wood doors, one of which was 24″. The prices weren’t listed for the doors individually, so when I called, the seller told me they’d let this one go for $50. After a couple of weeks of trying to plan for pick up, I was starting to count this one as a loss.  But we finally were able to nail down a time, and I made it home with this guy.

Not only was it solid wood as they claimed (sometimes Craigslist sellers like to fib), it was a perfect fit.  So over the next week I got to work painting after Aurelia was asleep.

We had Behr Premium Ultra exterior paint from another project, so I just used that. I repainted all of the trim downstairs the first summer we lived here and we’ve always used Behr, so matching the white wasn’t an issue! I used a trim brush each pane, and a small roller for the rest. Paint, dry, flip: x6. Each side took three coats. When you are painting furniture or any piece like this, always do a light sanding in between each coat. That will make for a smooth, flawless finish. Once it was fully dry, I used a box trimmer to remove the plastic on the glass panes, did a final touch up, and used a razor blade for the final edging. Then the fun really began.

I love tools. A lot. And my Dad has every tool there is. Ones you don’t even think could even exist. So who knew there were these template kits you could buy to drill in hinges and door knobs. And PLUNGE routers to ensure the perfect depth!? Mind = blown.24b14159-e79d-4a16-95b2-d60fd4c71f09_300 737888122004 78828282-0a12-4ec5-a57b-c266c3be09b1_300

A cameo from the man himself. He does calculations so fast it is just laughable. We kept joking like, “oh I think we have to do this one again… it’s too perfect.” This actually did not take that long once we had the templates matched off to the correct shape and size. Then we finally got to hang it!

Not bad for a $50 Craigslist score.

Have a great Thursday everyone! Any big finds you’ve scored lately!?

A Vessel

image

I am a vessel and I have been assigned to carry you my dear. I prep my sails. I prep my crew. You are mine, and I will carry you. I am a vessel and I am made to sail. Through waters rough, through waters deep, tuck in, you’re safe, I will rock you to sleep. I am a vessel, mighty and grand, captained by Providence, something greater than man. Though battered and blown, I will press on until I deliver you home. And after your feet land safe on the ground, no matter where you wander, how far or how long, no matter what adventures should befall you, come danger or harm, return to your harbor, make your way to the shore. I am your vessel and I will carry you home.

A Convex Situation

Does anyone else have a mirror thing? I have a mirror thing. Much like my chair thing. I find mirrors everywhere that just kill me I love them so much. Very rarely do I walk away with these mirrors, but sometimes a little prize is too good to pass up. I have really been into the convex mirror trend lately because they add such an interesting dimension to a space. See here?

How about that striped wall by the way? What a beautiful collage!

So whilst out perusing at Home Goods this weekend, I happened upon a convex mirror for $24.99.  It took me about one minute to decide to bring it on home. But it was sort of white washed, so I knew I wanted to paint it. Since the mirror was round, and convex obviously, I stood in the kitchen for a while contemplating how I was going to tape or cover it so that I could paint it.

Then, light bulb!

Glad cling wrap- press and seal! Sorry for the blurry picture (per the usual). I was so excited about my plan I didn’t even take a true before pic.

I used my husband’s buck knife to carefully trim around the edge of the frame. This took a bit of patience, and maybe a box cutter would’ve been a bit easier, but like I said, I was excited. And the buck knife was the first knife I spotted.

Rustoleum’s Metallic paint in gold is still my all time favorite gold spray paint. It is hands down the best finish and the perfect shade of brushed gold.

It worked like a charm.

Only a tiny bit of paint got on the mirror, which scratched off with the edge of my fingernail. Success! I’m still thinking about where it will hang, but I like it a lot where it is right now in the kitchen. Not bad for $25!

Have a great Tuesday!

Sail Away

Monday again? Anyone else want to sail away? I have different groups of friends in Mexico this week who don’t even know each other, so I am doubly jealous. I mean, I know I was just in Florida, but still. A girl can still dream.

And one of those dreams involves a long weekend in New England antiquing, meandering, drinking coffee, and wearing large sunglasses. And probably lots of stripes. I have a serious love for all things nautical. I already have several touches of nautical inspiration in my home, but here are a few of my favorite things from Etsy that take me back to the sea.

This print might make an appearance in the new nursery if we find we are expecting a boy!

From High Street Market (one of my very favorite shops!), this is a door stopper but would be great for layering in a bookcase!

These colors are incredible.

Another excellent “little something” for a subtle nautical touch.

One of these is on my husband’s wish list and I agree!

While this porthole mirror is a little on the pricey side, I die over that green.

I have to admit that I also love the anchor trend right now. I am beyond excited to about these custom ruffle pants coming soon for Aurelia!

I chose a mint monogram, and I cannot wait to see my tiny, busy girl bustling around Destin in these when we go back in July. I ordered from Ladybugs & Tadpoles, which is owned by a fabulous gal from my hometown, Malorie Meadows.  Check out her Facebook page here for some of the cutest baby and children’s clothes around!

Have a great Monday everyone!

Found: Number Four Eleven

Good day everyone! Thank you for coming back around to me here. Yesterday I had a classic wake-up-panicked morning because I didn’t set my alarm. Hence the no-post Thursday. But today it is Friday and I have one of my favorite shops to share with you today!  Number Four Eleven creates heirloom quality monograms and has some of the most beautiful table linens and gifts I have ever seen! Monograms can be really overdone (thanks Pottery Barn), but there is something timeless about a truly unique monogram.  It is reminiscent of family crests. I am living vicariously through owners Claire and Courtland. Their store is on my list of places I must visit on my next jaunt to Savannah, and their blog is just awesome. Easy to get lost for a couple of hours over there. And as a side note, I LOVE you guys for sourcing paint colors.  Now, onward to the monogram porn:

I want them all.

Look at all these fantastic gifts ideas!

I am dying over that set of gold sea urchins.  And that nautical knot might be making an appearance at a later date in the Saggio household, stay tuned.  By the way, I haven’t linked each image, but that just means you can have a good time digging around their site to find something you might not know you needed!  I love this little shop!

This weekend we are having our community yard sale, along with several other neighborhoods in the area!  Come on out and visit me!

Happy Friday!  Have a beautiful weekend.

Trade Off

I keep thinking about trade offs.  Something always has to give, at least in my world.  I work in an industry in which I am immersed and surrounded by wealth and high earners.  Two and three homes, and not one moment’s attention paid to the balance in their accounts, except for how much more money is made.  I have mixed feelings about this.  1.  It is something to aspire to!  I now understand how wealth is built, how it is maintained and how to plan for the future.  I would love to never have to balance my checkbook again.  2. On the other hand, it sometimes feels extremely disconnected from reality because of that.  Many of these people are the “1%,” but the misconception is that they haven’t worked hard for it.  Everyone knows my feelings on hard work.  It’s just by chance that I ended up in this industry anyway.  How an English major who loves to read and talk about character development, dreams of teaching in another life (and living in academia forever), ended up with two very difficult licenses to trade securities… I don’t know.  For the short story, I’m a stock broker.  Not like Wall Street, however.  Just sitting quietly at a desk all day.  Ok sometimes quietly.  Sometimes I get rowdy.

It’s difficult sometimes not to get caught up in the race, and in my industry, and my position, they do a very good job of reeling you in slowly.  It’s sort of like drinking the koolaid if you follow me.  My heart’s happiness is found in writing, making things, working on my home, helping others in their planning, celebrating renovations, and of course, salvaging all things.  But (big ole’ BUT), I have a pretty good gig, and I’m so thankful for what that has enabled us to do as a family, and as a couple planning for our future one day.  I’ve learned more than the average person will ever know about retirement planning, estate planning, and saving saving saving money.  My senior partner always says he would rather have a Kansas City housewife, an electrician, or a plumber as a client above anyone else, because they are smart, tuned in, and oh-so-wise with their money.  People like that make our jobs easy, and they make it fun.  Being incredibly detail oriented has been a blessing in my career and at six years in, I can say I really am happy.  But there’s that trade off that keeps looming in my head.  And it’s guilt.

I’m not with my daughter during the day.  I miss moments with her that are mine to have.  What is the true cost of my career?  I’m not saying I know the answer to that.  I’m not saying it’s wrong of me or any other mother to work.  That’s what’s wrong with our position as mothers these day:  we are all too competitive and defensive about our decisions.  But how can we not be?  At every turn you have strong opinions, and good examples, of mothers doing it both ways.  Yesterday Aurelia pinched her brow and asked my Mom, “Mama?” “She’s at work!”… “Dada!?”  ”He’s at work too!”  There’s a trade off.  And right now everything is beautiful and there is no impending doom, nothing is wrong and I’m not wringing my hands over our life, my position, and definitely not my daughter’s well-being.  Right now I weigh the trade off.  It is definitely something to ponder…

Sea Island

We all have our favorite vacation spot.  Both sides of our families have been going to the Gulf for years, but after this last trip and now that we have a growing little family, I started doing a little digging.  I’m going to let these images speak for me here, but I’m dying over the 5 Star Sea Island Resort.  This is truly the epitome of a getaway.  They have successfully captured the feel of an English manor and replicated New England charm, but has grounds with giant live oaks and sweeping Spanish moss.  Nestled just off the Atlantic off the coast of Georgia: Sea Island.

I sort of can’t deal with this place.  I just keep saying ohmygoodnessohmygoodness over and over again…  And not only is it breathtakingly gorgeous, it is family oriented with dozens of activities for little ones.  Sea Island is on my dream vacation list for sure.

Happy Tuesday!  It’s rough being back on this 5:00-5:30 am schedule after being on vacation time sheesh.  Have a great day!

Turquoise Summer

After a week’s hiatus, I’m back refreshed and motivated to keep hammering away at several projects that have been looming for quite some time.  We are working on a fantastic find that I cannot wait to share!  I am finally working on the long overdue kitchen drapes, and this week we are purging for our neighborhood yard sale this Saturday!

Being on the coast all week was just the medicine I needed, and it came at just the right time.  It is always so difficult to go back to work after vacation, so to ease the sting, I put together some beautiful finds from Etsy that will help you bring back that feeling of a turquoise summer.

One of my favorite Schumacher prints, Betwixt!

And especially hard to come back after getting to have a full week with my baby girl.

And looking at this guy like he was an alien.  ”Are you really HERE!?”

IMG_2504

We are already looking forward to getting back to Florida for another week in our favorite family vacation spot in July!  Which happens to be a couple of weeks after I join the 30-something crowd… which is sort of crazy.

I am so looking forward to this summer with our tiny girl as we get ready to meet her little brother or sister this fall.  Stay tuned for more inspiration and DIYs from the Salvaged!

Thanks for being such awesome readers!

Home at Last!

Today we welcomed my brother home. That experience is easily one of the coolest things I’ve been a part of. Watching those soldiers file off the plane, bagpipes playing and the sound of the crowd cheering, that row of camo walking toward us… It is beautifully American. And made me swell with pride. My brother. I couldn’t be happier than I was to hug his neck and see his smiling face.

We are in Florida this week celebrating him home. Posts will be short and sweet this week. We are celebrating!
